Pa. city takes first step to impose term limits for elected officials

WILLIAMSPORT — The city of Williamsport has taken the first step toward term limits for its elected officials, including the mayor.

City Council, by a 7-0 vote on Thursday, passed on first reading an ordinance that limits the mayor, treasurer and controller to two consecutive four-year terms. It would be three four-year terms for members of the council.

Anyone currently in office when the ordinance takes effect would be able to serve the rest of that term, even if it exceeded the limit.

The ordinance is expected to be amended when it comes up for a vote on second reading on Oct. 16 to comply with a state Supreme Court ruling that the law cannot be retroactive.
