Will a 2018 map ruling come back to haunt 3 Pa. Supreme Court justices? Republicans hope so

Courts are supposed to be above politics, but partisan interests and concerns are already shaping this November's fight over whether to retain three Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices.

In 2018, a dozen Republican state legislators wanted to impeach the three Democratic justices — Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty and David Wecht — who are now up for a retention vote. The court ruled that the state's Congressional district map was unconstitutionally gerrymandered, and replaced it with one that produced a more bipartisan mix of representatives.

At a town hall hosted by Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts Monday, Justice David Wecht said it’s no surprise Republicans want his removal.

“We took away a prized possession of some highly partisan actors in our system who had created a flamboyantly gerrymandered map, was an insult to democracy, and was Exhibit A nationwide for the most obscene U.S. House map of any state in our nation,” Wecht told WHYY moderator Cherri Gregg.
