Man who wants to kill vote-by-mail challenges Roseburg transit election

Ben Edtl is working to save his job — and also change the way Oregonians cast their ballots.

The CEO of the transit agency that serves Roseburg and Douglas County is refusing to accept the results of a local election whose outcome could get him fired.

Edtl, 47, is a Tualatin-based political consultant who is also the chief petitioner for a 2026 ballot initiative that would end Oregon’s pioneering vote-by-mail system. He is a rising player in the MAGA wing of the Oregon’s Republican Party.

And since April he has been the full-time CEO of Umpqua Public Transportation District, which provides public transportation in the state’s ninth-most-populous county.
