State of FEMA unclear as Oregonians reckon with wildfire, flood season

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Following the deadly floods in Texas and destructive wildfires in Oregon, the fate of the federal agency tasked with answering the call when disaster strikes hangs in the balance.

Both President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem have publicly shared their desire to “phase out” or even “eliminate” the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

However, as residents struggle to rebuild in the wake of the March floods in Harney County and wildfires in Central Oregon, KOIN 6 wanted to know what the FEMA’s fluid state means for emergency response and recovery.

The answer: State leaders and Emergency Management officials are unsure.
