OK-ED: Marshall wins Democratic primary for state superintendent

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Democrats have chosen Jennettie Marshall as their nominee for the state’s top education office.

Marshall, a former Tulsa Board of Education member, defeated former El Reno Public Schools Superintendent Craig McVay in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election for state superintendent, winning 58% to 42%. She will advance to the Nov. 3 General Election and face the winner of an Aug. 25 runoff election between Republicans Robert Franklin and James Taylor.

Whoever wins the General Election will succeed state Superintendent Lindel Fields as the head of the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the state Board of Education.

Marshall, 67, of Tulsa, served eight years on the school board governing Tulsa Public Schools, the state’s largest district. She had a lengthy career in law enforcement, corrections and as a pastor.
