Acting Cleveland County sheriff calls for FBI investigation, special election for new sheriff

CLEVELAND COUNTY, Okla. — The acting Cleveland County sheriff asked the Board of County Commissioners to forgo the current sheriff appointment process and call for a special election while also requesting an FBI investigation.

Acting Sheriff Mike Finley addressed the board at 1 p.m. Monday, saying he has requested that a matter be investigated by the FBI's Public Corruption Division. He did not say what that matter was in a post made to the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page.

"Based on information obtained through an Open Records/FOIA request, I have become aware of information and concerns that I believe warrant further review by the appropriate authorities," Finley said in the statement. "The rationale for this request is not to accuse any individual of wrongdoing, but rather to ensure transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the integrity of county government and law enforcement. An independent review would help determine the facts and provide assurance that any concerns are evaluated appropriately."

Finley then requested that the commissioners suspend the process of appointing a new sheriff. He instead asked for a special election to allow Cleveland County residents to select the new sheriff.
