NC Woman Hit With Murder Indictment After SBI Says Child Was Given Fatal Meds

PERSON COUNTY, N.C. – North Carolina state investigators announced a major indictment in the tragic death of a toddler who died while under the watch of social services.

According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, a Person County Grand Jury handed down a true bill of indictment on Monday against Latisha Linzsey, officially charging her in the death of 20-month-old Kemari Morgan.

Authorities say Kemari was found unresponsive in his crib on May 24 while in the care of Person County Social Services. Despite emergency efforts, the toddler could not be revived.

According to the SBI, tests showed Kemari died after receiving a fatal dosage of multiple medications, a discovery that ultimately pushed investigators to take the case before a grand jury.

Devising AI guardrails: NC Attorney General launches nationwide task force

Jan. 19—Attorney generals from across the country are joining forces to deal with new AI developments.

The focus of the newly formed task force, headed up by North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson and Utah Attorney General Derek Brown, is two-fold: how can the new technology be utilized, while also creating reasonable safeguards to protect citizens from potential crimes related to AI.

"I think that we all agree that this technology is going to have a transformational effect on our economy and our workforce and our education and just life in general," Jackson said. "The idea with this task force is to emphasize public safety, consumer protection and business innovation, and to do our work in a way that is bipartisan, because we are stronger when we speak with one voice."

Jackson led a conference call this week announcing the launch of the task force of attorneys general from across the country.

Bishop William Barber discusses his unifying vision for the nation and reflections on MLK Day

Commemorative services are planned across the state Monday as the nation pauses for a federal holiday in observance of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. MLK Day is a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities.

Bishop William Barber – president of Repairers of the Breach and architect of the Forward Together Moral Movement – will mark the day with a series of speeches encouraging people of all backgrounds to come together and sound the alarm against unjust policies that have led to healthcare cuts, gerrymandered districts, reduced funding for public schools, and increased aggressive actions by ICE agents.

Barber and a coalition of North Carolina religious leaders and advocacy organizations recently announced plans for a memorial march in mid-February to speak out against regressive policies while highlighting what they believe is a better path forward for the nation. NC Newsline sat down with Bishop Barber to discuss the upcoming march and his thoughts as we mark the 2026 MLK Day. Barber shared with us one of the key objectives of the upcoming February march is to lift up a vision of what caring and thinking people are for, more than just the policies that they’re against.
