RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) Officials at the North Carolina coast on Sunday declared a state of emergency in Dare County and Hyde County and ordered an evacuation of Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island at the Outer Banks, ahead of expected flooding from Hurricane Erin.
Already Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a coastal flood watch for the Outer Banks starting Tuesday with breaking waves from 15 to 20+ feet.
Portions of N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island will likely be impassable for several days, Dare County Emergency Management officials said in the state of emergency late Sunday afternoon. The Hyde County Board of Commissioners on Sunday evening issued a State of Emergency for Ocracoke Island.
Dare County and Hyde County leaders said that life-threatening impacts are expected along the coast from Hurricane Erin.

(29,142 posts)We're already under a flood warning because of all the rain we've had this past week. The Cape Fear River is already at flood stage, and I'm very close to the river.
Hatteras Island flooding is inevitable in this case. I'm sure that the roads there will be washed out.
Houses started falling into the ocean there a couple of years ago. Now, they are proactively being demolished to protect the beach from the dangerous debris that results from a collapse.
The farm is situated at an elevation where when it floods, it essentially becomes an island. I just have to wait for the water to receed before I can go anywhere. Because of the river, the roads are usually impassable and dangerous. So, I just hunker down and wait.

(24,146 posts)It was a 2-bedroom/2-bathroom cottage my wife built and used as a rental business. The house was solidly built and stood on stilts 8-feet above the ground. It was a lovely property and the rental schedules were usually nearly full.
In 2019, Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 storm, swept over the OBX after devastating the Bahamas. We were lucky because the stilts saved our place. Many other homes were destroyed by the 7-foot wall of water that covered Ocracoke which is only 2-feet above sea level. Following the storm, many homeowners had their houses lifted onto stilts to prevent protect their homes from another flood.
We chose a different course and we sold our place. We didnt want to go through that again!
The OBX is a beautiful but dangerous place. Its not ideal for homes!
