My dad was unexpectedly recalled for the Korean War, when he had a decent paying civilian job, a wife and new baby. My mom moved in with his parents, found work and I was raised by my grandparents during the day.
My dad, who had already served during WWII, was bitter for having to serve twice. It put his and my mom’s lives on hold and he couldn’t see me for a year. He thought that the younger generation of men, those who were the same age as he was during WW2, should have gone first as they hadn’t served their country, had recently reached adulthood and didn’t have family commitments yet.
