Voter turnout steady for municipal general election

PEARL, Miss. — Election officials in the metro area said they have periodically seen surges in voters coming to the polls to cast their ballots in the municipal general election.

In Pearl, there were a large number of voters coming through. A Pearl election official credited the turnout to interest in city races and a referendum on whether to allow wine and liquor stores in the city limits.

At Christ United Church in Jackson, there were no lines Tuesday morning. Voters were focused on the race for mayor, which has six candidates on the ballot. A lot of the voters 16 WAPT News spoke to said they are ready for a change at Jackson City Hall.

Democrat John Horhn is the front-runner in the race after he defeated incumbent Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba in the primary runoff election.
