Jackson election leaders expect huge turnout for mayor's race
JACKSON, Miss. Jackson is preparing for a significant voter turnout as polls open for Tuesday's general election, where voters will elect leaders for cities and towns, including a new mayor.
The city of Jackson Election Commission is planning for a huge turnout, as only about 20% of voters cast ballots during primary and runoff races. Poll managers from across Jackson are picking up equipment for Tuesday's general election.
"We are preparing for a huge turnout. And we're hoping for a huge turnout. We want it to be a lot better than it was in the runoff," said Linda Sanders, chair of the Jackson Election Commission. "It takes a lot to get ready for an election, and when they don't show up, that's a lot of money going to waste here."
Experts say Democratic nominee John Horhn is the odds-on favorite to emerge victorious from a field of five challengers, including independent Rodney DePriest.
