U-M regent hopeful Makled (D) scrutinized over antisemitic content in now-deleted social media posts

Amir Makled, an attorney who fought for the free-speech rights of pro-Palestinian students at the University of Michigan, is aiming for a seat on the university’s Board of Regents, and Democratic Party delegates will soon decide if Makled is indeed the right man for the job.

What delegates may want to know before casting votes at the party’s upcoming April endorsement convention is that the avowed progressive Democrat — who is advocating for the rights of all people, free expression, affordability and accountability — had previously used his social media pages to platform some of the far-right’s most virulent voices, including Marjorie Taylor Greene and Candace Owens. Some of those posts were antisemitic in nature, as Owens, in particular, referred to Israelis, that vast majority of whom are Jewish, as “demons” who “lie, cheat, murder and blackmail,” perpetuating centuries-old stereotypes.

The content in question was reposted by Makled last year but has since been deleted. Michigan Advance obtained archived versions of the tweets using Internet Archive. Those archived X posts show that Makled specifically retweeted Greene and Owens when they grew critical of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. They also appear to align with Makled’s unapologetic stance that the Palestinian people were entitled to life and liberty as they faced strife in Gaza.......

The reposts from Greene were fairly tame in nature, focused more on her musings that helping Israel was against President Donald Trump’s America First doctrine. However, many of the posts from Owens that Makled reposted were explicitly antisemitic. One post showed Makled sharing a cartoon of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu inserting current Syrian President Abu Mohammad al-Julani as its new figurehead. The post contains a play on al-Julani’s name, switching it to “Jewlani,” a slur insinuating that the once-fervent Al-Qaeda and Al-Nursa Front fighter was now a pragmatist who was more willing to work with Israel than fight it.
