Incumbents lead in Detroit council at-large race as ex-member tries comeback, poll finds
Incumbents Mary Waters and Coleman Young II are leading comfortably in the race for the two at-large seats on the Detroit City Council, according to a new poll commissioned by The Detroit News and WDIV-TV (Channel 4).
In the May 27-29 survey of 500 likely Aug. 5 primary voters, respondents were read the list of 10 candidates for the at-large seats and asked who would be their first and their second choice. Waters was selected by 32% of voters as their first choice and 18% as their second. Meanwhile, 21% of the voters selected Young II as their first choice and 32% picked him as their second.
"I think both of them have years of name ID built up with the voters," said Richard Czuba, founder of the Lansing-based Glengariff Group, which conducted the poll. "Both of them have been on the scene for a number of years, and it shows in these numbers. Voters recognize these choices."
In the poll, 29.3% of voters were undecided about their first choice and 29.5% on their second choice. The top four candidates will advance to the general election.
