Special election results: Residents vote in favor of new school

WILMINGTON — Wilmington held a special town election on Tuesday, Sept. 16 for residents to vote yes or no on the debt exclusion required to borrow the funds to pay for the proposed new pre-kindergarten through grade five elementary school. Polls were open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting took place at the Senior Center, at 130 Main St., for precincts one through three; and at the Town Hall, at 121 Glen Road, for precincts four through six.

In addition to the official in-person voting day, the town allowed vote by mail and absentee ballots. Absentee voting ended on Sept. 15 at 12 p.m., and mail-in ballots needed to be returned by the 16th.

Residents could also have voted early at the town clerk’s office in town hall. Early voting was held during town hall hours leading up to the 16th but ending on Friday the 12th.

The specimen ballot asked residents whether they would allow the town to exempt the amounts required to pay for the construction of a new Wildwood Elementary School to be located at 320 Salem St. from the provisions of Proposition 2.5. This would allow the town to borrow $96 million. The town plans to borrow this money with a fixed rate over 30 years and supplement the borrowing with existing funds and grant funds.
