Cape Cod's May elections unanimous against nuclear waste. Holtec calls vote 'misinformed.'
Voters across Cape Cod and nearby towns are sending a clear message for state leaders: they dont want wastewater vapor from the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, closed since 2019, released into the air.
That position is underscored by results of a nonbinding public advisory question that appeared on ballots in all but one Cape Cod town during the region's election season, May 5-20. The final town, Barnstable, does not have a spring election so the Town Council will consider the measure.
Advocacy groups Save Our Bay MA Coalition and Cape Downwinders, are opposed to Holtec International's use of evaporation as a nuclear wastewater disposal method while the plant is being decommissioned. The groups provided the muscle for the initiative which asked voters whether they wanted to direct their local officials to urge state leaders to take action and prohibit the practice.
A spokesman for Holtec defended the practice and said the question is "misinformed" and pushed by anti-nuclear activists.
