Updated: Hempel Irani leads in City Council District 5 after primary election polls close

Sarah Hempel Irani leads in the race for Frederick City Council District 5 after in-person votes from the day of the primary election were counted Tuesday.

Hempel Irani had 82 votes to her opponent Ryan Trout’s 53, according to results posted by city officials.

City officials expected to start counting mail-in and drop-off ballots on Thursday at 9 a.m.

The city planned to mail a ballot to every registered Democrat in the city. The deadline for returning them was 8 p.m. on Tuesday at a drop box. If they were mailed, they had to be postmarked by Tuesday.
