Election 2025: Sheriff, Mayor, and Council races take shape in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS Friday marks the final day for candidates to qualify for the October 11 election in Orleans Parish, with several key races drawing intense attention, including those for mayor, city council, coroner, and sheriff.
The sheriffs race is especially heated as incumbent Susan Hutson seeks reelection amid criticism following a recent inmate escape. Hutson temporarily paused her campaign in the days after the jailbreak but confirmed to WWL Louisiana that she will run for a second term.
She faces at least three challengers: former New Orleans Police Department interim chief Michelle Woodfork, Constable Edwin Mark Shorty Jr., and former sheriffs deputy Ernest Lee Sr. Former Criminal Court Judge Julian Parker is also expected to qualify before the 4 p.m. deadline.
Hutson is going to have to overcome voter resistance to her reelection, and that is a tall order, said political analyst Clancy DuBos. Im not saying she cant do it, but she has the steepest hill to climb of the three well-known candidates.
