Source: Orleans Sheriff Susan Hutson expected to resume re-election campaign
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson is expected to resume her campaign for re-election, sources confirmed Wednesday, weeks after suspending her bid in the wake of the highly publicized mass jailbreak from the Orleans Justice Center.
Hutson, who made history in 2021 as the first Black woman elected sheriff in Louisiana, temporarily halted her re-election campaign amid intense public scrutiny following the escape of 10 inmates from the jail in May. The escape, the largest in recorded parish history, triggered state and federal investigations and backlash from city and state leaders.
At the time, Hutson said she was suspending campaign activity to focus fully on regaining public trust and correcting the failures that led to the breach.
Now, with nine of the 10 escapees recaptured, Hutson is expected to formally qualify for re-election, a source tells FOX 8.
