Louisiana qualifying period begins ahead of fall elections

NEW ORLEANS — Candidates officially began qualifying Wednesday for the upcoming fall election in New Orleans, with the process running through Friday.

Several individuals are expected to make their way to the clerk of court's office to add their names to the ballot.

The biggest race being followed in the area is for mayor of New Orleans, where a handful of candidates have already launched their campaigns. Mayor LaToya Cantrell cannot run for re-election because of term limits.

Those looking to qualify include New Orleans Council Vice President Helena Moreno, New Orleans Councilman Oliver Thomas, former Judge Arthur Hunter, former Orleans Parish Communication District Director Tyrell Morris, Renada Collins, Ricky Twiggs, Sen. Royce Duplessis, and Frank Scurlock.
