IA-SD01: Reynolds sets date for Iowa Senate District 1 special election

DES MOINES, Iowa — A special election to fill the Iowa Senate District 1 seat will be held next month, according to a Monday proclamation by Gov. Kim Reynolds.

The election will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26 to fill a vacancy left in the statehouse after former state Sen. Rocky De Witt lost his battle with cancer last week at the age of 66.

De Witt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2024, a release from the governor said. Despite this, De Witt continued to serve in the Senate until his death.

Senate District 1, which is located entirely in Woodbury County, mainly covers Sioux City and Lawton.
