Champaign County Sheriff Heuerman seeks third term in 2026 election

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WICS) — Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman has announced his intention to seek re-election for a third term in 2026.

Sheriff Heuerman, who was first elected in 2018, has accomplished and overcome several challenges including navigating the COVID-19 pandemic in Champaign County and the county jail, implementing reforms from the SAFE-T Act and Pre-Trial Fairness Act, and overseeing infrastructure projects to modernize the Sheriff's Office and the county jail. He also emphasized the enhancement of technology for more efficient operations and collaboration with community groups and local officials to address community challenges.

"Being successful in the role of Sheriff involves building partnerships with community stakeholders so we can make a real impact in our community," said Sheriff Heuerman. "It requires putting stubborn politics aside in the name of serving everyone in our community as best as we can. I believe I have proven during my time as Sheriff that I have the ability to do this. I'm looking forward to building on these relationships over the next several years so we can better mitigate the challenges Champaign County is still facing and not lose the progress we've made."

Sheriff Heuerman has been actively engaged with the community, collaborating with organizations such as the Champaign County Farm Bureau, Champaign County Community Coalition, and Eastern Illinois Foodbank. He also serves as a board member for the Champaign Rotary Club and the Illinois Sheriffs' Association, employing a holistic approach to address public safety concerns and advance the profession.
