Bridgeport's Castillo backed for re-election despite facing criminal charges for election violations

Bridgeport's Castillo backed for re-election despite facing criminal charges for election violations

Alfredo Castillo, first elected in 2013 to represent the Hollow neighborhood and some of the East Side, was backed by his district representatives on the Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee at Tuesday's convention in the downtown government center.

Castillo was arrested in June 2024 and again in February 2025 for alleged misuse of absentee or mail-in ballots in, respectively, the 2019 and 2023 elections during which he backed incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim. He has pleaded not guilty to all 22 counts and his next pre-trial court date is Aug. 13.

Despite those pending criminal cases Castillo's re-election candidacy was quickly endorsed Tuesday with no debate. He could not immediately be reached for comment.
