https://www.denver7.com/lifestyle/education/former-dean-files-lawsuit-against-elizabeth-school-district-over-book-ban-firingELIZABETH, Colo. A lawsuit has been filed against the Elizabeth School District after LeEllen Condry, the former Elizabeth Middle School Dean of Students, claims she was fired for opposing the book ban, calling it unethical and racist.
Denver7 has been following this story since the decision to first ban books and the updates that have followed. In August 2024, the Elizabeth School District Board of Education voted to remove nearly two dozen books from library shelves, including Thirteen Reasons Why, #Pride: Championing LGBTQ Rights, The Kite Runner, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and others.
"I'll deal with the elephant in the room. This is not book banning," said board secretary Mary Powell during the board meeting. "They are not on our shelf because we do not feel they fulfill the educational protocols that we believe in for this district."
The board also came up with a "sensitive topic protocol" where parents can opt their children out of checking out books that have certain topics like racism/discrimination, profanity/obscenity, religious viewpoints, and sexual content. A total of 138 books were on the sensitive topic book catalog, including "Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl", "To Kill a Mockingbird", and the Bible.

So you support pornography in our schools? Here's one excerpt from a more tame part of a book we removed from our collection.
Identical by Ellen Hopkins (EHS)
Identical is about twin girls, Kaeleigh and Raeanne. Kaeleigh is the good girl-her father's perfect flower, something she has tried so hard to be since she was nine and he started sexually abusing her. She cuts herself and binge eats, desperate to feel something normal. Raeanne uses painkillers, drugs, alcohol, sex, and purging as an outlet to numb the pain of not being Daddy's favorite.
I cracked my eyes just a slit as he sat
on Kaeleighs bed, pulled her into
his lap. He smelled of Brut and Wild
Turkey. His peculiar potpourri.
I love you so much, my little
flower. Daddy needs something
from my girl, my sweet rose.
Will you give it to me?
I wanted to be his little flower,
would have given my Daddy anything.
What did he want from Kaeleigh?
She laid her head on his chest. What?
I want you to see something,
something that proves how
much I love you. This is only
for you, Kaeleigh girl.
He lifted her gently, sat her
down on the bed beside him.
Then he opened the snaps on
the fly of his flannel pajamas.
*********
Confused at his tears,
and at the sticky stuff icing
her hands, still Kaeleigh pleaded,
Dont cry, Daddy. Whats the matter? Didnt
I love you good enough?

I support the poor girls who are going through this in REAL LIFE and have no idea that others have suffered and there is help available. You want them to suffer in silence.
His response: Absolutely not. That's what counseling and other wrap-around supports are for. No child should suffer in silence. I also believe no child should be exposed to filth and pornography while at school. I think we can both be right in this circumstance. Your knowledge of the actions taken in conjunction with the community is limited. It might be wise to actually understand everything that went into such an important decision other than reducing it to a simple "book ban" conversation.
