LATimesVillaraigosas stance separated him from three rival Democrats who appeared on stage with him at a candidate forum at UC Riverside.
Candidates, who were asked about a single-payer healthcare system during a question-and-answer session that only involved raising their hands, did not provide explanations for their stances. But during earlier remarks, Villaraigosa had said he had no interest in selling snake oil solutions to voters on complex matters like healthcare.
Aside from Villaraigosa, the candidates included: former state Controller Betty Yee, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra and California Supt. of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.

(1,889 posts)He has been since he was Mayor of Los Angeles. Just another philandering husband until his ex-wife with two of his children sent him packing. Mayor of the people my arse. Never saw a political office he didn't want. He will absolutely carry water for corporations.
Consider yourselves warned.

(2,032 posts)But we can get HSR and an entire new network of commuter rail -with a proliferation of LR, if we have a leader who has proven to be able to make good on the promise of audacious transportation projects. Villairagosa is that guy.

"As mayor, Villaraigosa regularly made headlines with a series of scandals including his use of $489k of federal taxpayer stimulus funds to refurbish a mayoral yacht in the Port of Los Angeles. He also added a "hydro-electric propulsion system."
"Villaraigosa, who served as the citys mayor for eight-years, broke the record for the largest ethics fine levied in California state history in 2011 $41,849 for failing to disclose free tickets he gave away to dozens of sports and entertainment events. He wound up paying back the city $42k.
During his time as mayor, Villaraigosa was the subject of countless ethics investigations. In 2007, the Los Angeles Ethics Commission accused him of 31 ethics violations surrounding his 2003 run for City Council."

(2,032 posts)My point is that connecting people via expansive transportation hubs could potentially outweigh those concerns. Villairagosa -while controversial, revolutionized transportation in ways that created the opportunity for vast levels of social mobility and opportunity.

(1,889 posts)Not that I'm comparing him to Hitler but he has a history of untrustworthiness and I personally am all out of chances to give. As far as I'm concerned he's done. The bigger the trust you give the bigger and more lasting the betrayal you feel. I have more receipts but I think I provided enough, for now.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

"Villairagosa is a a liberal and immigrant. And uses those facts as a point of pride to get elected."
He is a capitalist first and foremost and a liberal if it serves him, depending on which community he's talking to. A true liberal doesn't change their beliefs in policy because they're talking to the banking industry.
Second he only embraces his ethnic status when amongst family and friends within the community, unless he's changed which is a possibility now that he's closer to the end than the beginning. Mortality has a way of helping one to see the light. I'm sure he sees this as his last hoorah.
I'm sure he has many regrets, at least I hope he does. He should rest and call it a night.
