After outburst, Katie Porter's support in the California governor's race slips, new poll shows

• Former Rep. Katie Porter’s support in the 2026 governor’s race plummeted after an October outburst during a television interview with a reporter.
• A new UC Berkeley poll shows Republican Chad Bianco now leads at 13%, while Porter dropped to 11% from 17% support in August.
• Nearly half of likely voters remain undecided, indicating the race remains wide open as few Californians have begun paying close attention.

SACRAMENTO — A new poll shows that former Orange County Rep. Katie Porter’s support in the 2026 governor’s race dropped after she tangled with a television reporter during a heated interview in October, an incident that rival candidates used to question her temperament.

Porter was the clear front-runner over the summer, but by late October she dropped behind Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican, according to a poll released Friday by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies and co-sponsored by The Times.

Still, nearly half of the registered voters surveyed remain undecided, evidence that few Californians are paying attention to a race that remains wide open and was eclipsed in recent months by the costly and successful congressional redistricting battle that became a referendum on President Trump. Porter remains the most favored Democratic candidate, which is significant in a state that has not elected a Republican governor since 2006.

“She’s the leading Democrat among the various ones that are in there right now,” said Mark DiCamillo, director of the poll. “But it’s because nobody really on the Democratic side has really jumped out of the pack. It’s kind of a political vacuum at the moment.”

IMO Porter has serious anger management issues. And forget Bianco -- he's hardcore MAGA. I suspect Xavier Becerra might have the best chance to be California's next governor.

The tech bros would love to see Porter’s campaign crash and burn, as they are terrified of her becoming Governor.

I don’t see Katie giving up so easily.

with the implication that she would win big. But it might take a “Draft Harris” movement. What do DUers think of that idea?

I liked Porter in Congress. I thought she was effective there, especially questioning corrupt businesspeople. But I don't think she'd be a good executive leader.

I LOVED her in the House with her white board and her piercing interrogations. However, I started to dislike her during her run for Senate. Though her positions were generally good, and I liked the idea of another female Senator, both Schiff (my rep for 20 years, whom I generally adore) and Barbara Lee had served SO much longer in the House and had much more experience we were going to need in the Senate. Her attitude of entitlement rubbed me very much the wrong way. Now, throwing a tantrum in public is a bad look and if I end up with an R governor because of her inability to control her emotions, I am going to be VERY pissed off!

Ooo, Porter had a bad day, so what. The Times is a rag these days only good for lining the bottom of bird cages.

Katie Porter has my Californian full throated support. She knows it was a bad look and stepped back, probably to regroup. I hope she dusts her self off, soon, and gets back at it.
Bianco is a real piece of Trump dung another racist. After prop 50 passed overwhelmingly do you seriously think voters are going to turn around and put another Arpaio in office. The Times saw an opportunity in a poll and wants to run with it while they can.
I think Caruso, a Republican in Democratic clothing may have had something to do with the story. He has money and clout and wants to run as a centrist. This early in the race, you want somebody else at the forefront to take the initial hits.
I'm good with Katie's pole position as long as she stays close to the top. Remember, Democrats have a much deeper bench and no incumbent. Katie Porter is a proven fighter, no pun intended, who comes with the receipts.
GO KATIE!

They phrased a math question as a policy question and then pushed back when she gave the right answer.

Making a big deal out of that is idiotic.
