Rent stabilization repeal to go before Salinas voters in 2026 general election

Bypassing an opportunity to "repeal the repeal," Salinas city council decided to put the fate of rent stabilization and other tenant related policies up for a vote during the 2026 general election.

The 4-3 decision was supported by councilmembers Gloria De La Rosa, Margaret D'Arrigo, Aurelio Salazar and Andrew Sandoval, who made the motion.

This means Salinas voters will decide on whether (or not) to withdraw the ordinance that repealed the four tenant laws that have been city policy since January.

The repeal ordinance, passed by city council in June, was never enacted because of a successful petition drive by Protect Salinas Renters, a coalition of renters and advocates, which paused the repeal process and forced city policymakers to revisit the issue.
