Emerson College finds majority support for Gavin Newsom's Election Rigging Response Act among California voters
Governor Gavin Newsoms bold plan to counter Republicans efforts to rig the maps for the 2026 midterms is finding favor with California voters, a new survey conducted by Emerson College suggests. 51% of respondents surveyed this month say they plan to vote in favor of Proposition 50, the Election Rigging Response Act, this November, despite opposition from former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and organizations that would prefer no response to Texas Republicans gerrymandering.
Even more encouraging for Democrats is that support is growing.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Republicans were aware of Newsoms plan to hit back before they rammed their map through in a special session of the Legislature after Democrats returned from their weeks-long walkout. They pushed it through anyway, not wanting to disobey Donald Trump and gambling that Newsoms Election Rigging Response Act would fall flat with voters. But the opposite is happening.
The first Emerson poll since the special election was officially declared to bring Proposition 50 to a vote finds over half of voters support the redistricting measure, up from 33% last month in a hypothetical proposal question, Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a statement announcing the finding.
