Franklin County judge urges earlier special election for Stubblefield's Senate seat before 2026 fiscal session

OZARK, Ark. — Franklin County Judge Rickey Bowman told 40/29 News that the fiscal session should be delayed if Arkansas Senate District 26 is not represented.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has called a special election to fill the seat left vacant by Sen. Gary Stubblefield, who died Sept. 2.

The election is set for Tuesday, June 9. In a proclamation, the governor said it would be impracticable or too burdensome to hold the election within 150 days of the vacancy.

Bowman is urging an earlier vote, arguing District 26 residents should be represented when lawmakers return to Little Rock in April for the 2026 fiscal session.
