Insane sunset pics.

We had a line of severe thunderstorms roll through about an hour before sundown; by the time it was late evening the sky was half-covered with a shelf of clouds being lit from below by the red sunset while the other half of the sky was gorgeously clear. Half wildfire and half heaven.

I shot all these with my 4-year old phone, offhand…by the time I got my real gear out the door the light had passed. Sunsets are mercurial like that, you get about five minutes of perfect light and it's over.

Still, thrilled you enjoyed!

Cell phones are amazing anymore. If I weren't so attached to my cameras I might look into one. What do you have for real gear?

D7100 with the 18-300 is my main rig…and the 35mm Micro, and a few others.

But this is my ne plus ultra, pure film, pure analog. IYKYK, and I suspect you do.

5. I shot Nikons for 35 years or so. My cousin has an older D3400, but she loves her 18-300!

I joined DU five years ago, mainly to see about the Photography Forum. One of the members told me about Olympus; smaller, lighter weight and less expensive than full-frame. He convinced me. I sold my Nikon gear and purchased a good used Olympus camera and zoom, equivalent to 24-90mm full-frame. Eventually I added another
used body and a second zoom 90-300mm ff equivalent.

That's a great photo of your Nikkormat. I can appreciate its significance to you. Back
to perfection basics, maybe? I'll bet you get great use out of it. Just from seeing
the offhand pics from that sunset sky it looks like you have a good eye. With no
time to waste you got great shots. Sunsets are mercurial.

But yes, I do get my best shots out of my Nikkormat. Prime lens (with amazing optics), manual wind, no viewscreen…the aperture-priority auto exposure is nice, but that's literally all the convenience it has. Much thought put into each shot beforehand, since the cost of film and developing is over a buck a pop.

One of my favorite shots with that rig…busker in NYC.

8. Probably, at least if I get any (what I consider) good ones.
