Couple of beach pix

Now that summer has eventually arrived. The bluebottle is a fascinating (if unwelcome) creature. Made up of four different types of sub-creatures called zooids: float, tentacles, feeding and reproduction. They live together as a colony and form the entity.

I have relocated to the eastern coastal area of the continent this year and, when summer comes, plan to return to some of the beaches I frequented in childhood. I grew up here and am looking forward to wandering these beaches to see what is there these days.

I had been in the Rocky Mountains for the last 30+ years so this is really a treat. This time I have chosen to live in the mountains so it's a little bit of a drive to the sea but I'm close enough to get there in a couple hours now as opposed to a 1700 mile expedition!

I did go 'down to the shore' for my birthday a couple months ago and treated myself to a seafood dinner and put my hands in the Atlantic for the first time in decades. It was too chilly to step in the water so I'll wait for warm weather to return for the official christening session!

I'm so glad you can revisit the beaches of your past with much more a manageable drive. Gibby my JRT is not exactly a water lover but on hot days she finds a sandy bottomed pool no more than 2inches deep and wallows in it. She's a craven little coward!

I know for me, the attraction (besides the water and sand) is the constantly changed environment - altered by wind, rain and water from day to day. I'm glad you're settled and hopefully happy in the east although I'm insanely envious of your time in the Rockies.

Just because - here's a pic of Gib giving me a serious side-eye.

She looks like she knows something she isn't going to like is probably on the menu! Cute!

I'll have to read up on that blue bottle hing you posted about. I've never heard of it or zooids before, and now I want to learn more about it!

Look up Portugese Man O War - everything I've read says that's what our southern critters are called but there are certain aspects of the MoW that is very unlike our bluebottles.

Only once, after an swarm of bluebottles washed up, I found several beautiful violet coloured sea snails which is a parasite that blows itself a little float and lives amount the bluebottles. How cool is that?
