This storm was a fire starter. I already had a crew on the way to a lightning fire about seven miles from the lookout.

(26,118 posts)I was extended by two weeks this year because of drought and warm weather. Normally, we shut down the lookout shortly after Labor Day.
The Idaho Panhandle has a short season for most lookouts because of high elevations (7000'+) and high latitudes (47°N and higher). Late August usually brings season-ending rains, and early September can bring snow. Last year (2024) I had snow at the lookout on August 31.
