God Bless the Child.

I first discovered Eric Dolphy, in my early 20s, after having discovered Coltrane. (Discovering Coltrane changed my life; I'm sure I'm not alone in this.)

The version of his work on Dolphy's God Bless the Child that I had on vinyl was recorded in Copenhagen or Berlin, I don't recall exactly. The version below, apparently recorded in Illinois, sounds almost note for note - I'm relying on memory - the same, although it's missing a loud riff corresponding to "Them's that got..."

(Dolphy died in Europe in 1964 from a misdiagnosed diabetic coma. Because he was a black jazz musician it was assumed he was having a drug overdose; Dolphy did not drink, smoke, or use drugs.)
