2. In '59 or '60, my mom's side grandparents took us on a three week tour of the Atlantic from VA south to Florida ...

... and we returned up though Alabama, Tennessee, KY, to Ohio.

Nothing made any impression on me (past how many relatives we had along the way in VA, Tenn, Kentucky, Indiana that we'd stay with - feather beds, what a great invention) but the chain gangs all over the south and the "Whites Only" water fountains made the BIG impression. It may have seeded the beginnings of my liberal sensibilities.

3. Same here. Remember the White Only signs, even employment ads that said only Caucasians need apply, and crud like that.
