Why, you ask? Because a not-yet-famous Porter notably told already-renowned writer Richard Rodgers that he would achieve his fame 'writing Jewish songs', although he was not Jewish himself. It was a sort of admission that all the well known composers in the genre he wanted to write in were Jews, ergo he'd try to write songs like these other composers did. He was pretty damn great at it, too. There aren't a lot of clearly greater songwriters than Porter in the American canon if you ask me.
