I can think of 3 which seem to have warned us about what our culture could become if we let it, and we have...
1. A Face In The Crowd

2. The Truman Show

3. Network

(5,973 posts)There was a live-action TV movie in 1999 as well. Both adaptations caught flack for altering the ending, but I believe Americans NEED such endings right now. In fact, I'd recommend the 1954 version to one and all.
...Oh dang, I just learned Andy Serkis is releasing a new adaptation this year!!

(9,733 posts)The final scene is reporting the arrest of the news anchor that has delivered the previous news stories about the corrupt government takeover taking place. It would be like watching Rachel and someone else comes on to report she had been arrested for treason.
I never forgot that movie. Damn sure never dreamed it could happen here.
(Edit: just looked it up. 1969. Turner Classic Movies channel.)

(7,313 posts)Movie was set in 2022, but I still think it's a prescient vision.

(52,948 posts)I did make that connection when I saw it on TV. That film has always been very scary to me since I was a pre-teen and first saw it as a TV Movie Of The Week. I still find it difficult to watch. People Crackers...yuk!

(446 posts)The government (Johnson administration) made a big deal at the time of claiming it wasn't possible to actually happen in America.
Really good flick, though.

(1,036 posts)Network is a fucking great one, though. That movie has aged exceedingly well. Granted, it was always timely, but no more so than it is now.
