Related: About this forumI did a pan pastel painting, a small one, for my friend, of him and his cat who is in kitty heaven now.
I was so worried Id messed it up, but he said he loves it and wants to display it in his home, and that made me so happy!
I like pan pastels. They are easier to control than standard pastels and WAYYYYYY less messy, like almost not messy at all. Virtually no dust.
If anyone asked me how to get started in soft pastels, I think I would recommend pan pastels for that reason, along with some pastel pencils for details. The initial cost is pretty substantial for a hobby, I mean for an art based hobby anyway, but the pans seem to last a very long time, enough for hundreds and hundreds of paintings, and the pans can be replaced individually as they are used up.
They came out with a big set of new colors, expanded shades and tints, etc. and Im longing for the new set so I can have all the colors. Normally I would ask for that as a birthday present, but I am trying not to spend much of anything, like a low buy, for at least the next four years. So Im telling myself, maybe someday I can buy the new set.
Anyway, this is the painting I did for my friend Ive known since high school. He lives in Canada with his husband. I think he genuinely does like it because he is always honest with me when he doesnt like a painting. So that makes me so thrilled! It makes me feel like I still have something to give to the world, now and then.
I did a couple of oil paintings of his cat Fletcher too, but they turned out kind of meh. I will include photos of those too.

P.S. tomorrow I go for my first cataract removal surgery, I am a little anxious and hope I will have reasonably good vision afterwards.

(848 posts)I think you did a wonderful job. I can almost hear the cat purring as he rubs your friends face. I do believe your friend will cherish this most personal of gifts, you have much to be proud of.

(2 posts)You can see the affection and joy the owner & his fur baby share. The details on the second cat are wonderful. Good luck with your surgery.

(123,507 posts)Sendng vibes for successful procedures and healing. I had cataract surgery three years ago, and went from 80 % blind back to my normal vision. May your results be wonderful.

(291 posts)I had cataract surgery in 2023. Stupidly, I elected to have both eyes done at once. One of my eyes is partially blind due to optic nerve stroke resulting from a medication reaction. The surgeon wanted to address the blind eye first, stating that if it didn't go well, I'd still have my "good" eye. That made no sense to me because the "good" eye was now legally blind due to the cataract. After a lengthy, mostly civil discussion, I went for broke and had both eyes corrected during the same surgery. I had no discomfort afterwards and didn't need any pain medication. I do not, however, recommend having surgery on both eyes at the same time. You may be required to wear eye shields following surgery and the next thing you know, you mistake hemorrhoid cream for toothpaste and Raid for hair spray. The upside is you will be thrilled when you can see again. My artificial lenses brought my visual acuity to 20/20. I can, once again, see individual leaves on the trees and clouds are white again and not yellow. I love your paintings! A friend of mine did a portrait of my Siamese cat 40 years ago and it hangs in a place of honor. If I had a portrait of every cat I've owned in the past 68 years, I would definitely qualify as a cat house (without the red porch light, of course). Wishing you a safe, comfortable, no stress surgery!

(10,997 posts)Im so glad you had a great result!
The doctor told me I will still need glasses afterwards
.i had lasik and its very hard to get it exactly right for patients who have had lasik.
He did feel confident my vision will be much better, and I will be less heavily dependent on glasses, afterwards.

(25,291 posts)Very touching. It made me smile.
Secondly, I had my cataracts done last fall. Please feel free to DM me about it. I was terrified going into it. And it went so well I couldn't believe it. It truly is a miracle. You won't believe how bright the world actually is.
Again, please DM me if you have any questions at all.

(982 posts)Love how they all capture the essence of that gorgeous cat. And the love and joy radiating from the first one- just spectacular.
