(23,572 posts)Mr YD and I do not like football, so we usually come home.
For years, we took our daughter to the movies instead of putting up with the game, usually to see the new Disney release. Her birthday is Nov 29th so after the movie we went back to her grandparents' house and had birthday cake and leftovers. It was her 'family' birthday party as opposed to whatever we did on her actual birthday. It saved trying to get the whole family together again between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Every year it can be different. Some years a bunch of us will go to the upstairs game room and watch something else on tv. Our crowd is going to be bigger this year, so who knows? Maybe someone will gin up a game of Loteria!
I think I will take our Chickenfoot Dominoes - even kids who can't read can play that.
When I was growing up, our extended families did not have a big Thanksgiving get together every year. If my mom's brother and step brothers were going to be in town, my mom's side of the family would have a huge dinner. We did not watch football; after kitchen cleanup, there would be a lot of sitting around the table talking over coffee and dessert.
Christmas was the biggie get together for my Dad's family usually the Sunday after Christmas. Back then it wasn't wall to wall football so we had a great time just being together and eating everyone's special dish(es).

Sometimes, not often theres a Hockey game on the day. Bonus!
Our family is very sports oriented. Before tv football we played our own games but we all got a little older.
