I'm a fan, because we are an elderly couple. However, I used to love visiting my food, so to speak, in person and picking out just the very best one of whatever I was shopping for.
But now, being old, I just want to get the food ordered and paid for online with my debit card. I get the groceries in the time frame I wish and I prepay a tip so it's all carried in the house and all I have to do is unpack the bags. It works out very well.
One thing: you can't order a limited number of some things such as bananas. I am the only one eating them and I ask for one and get one bunch, usually of 4 in total. Far too many bananas for me and my little cereal bowl! I'm never gonna make banana bread cuz I can't stay on my feet that long before my arthritic back gives out. (I guess I have to check out articles that help me cope with more bananas).
I find that the groceries are good quality and the fresh produce usually very fresh.
I like the service. YMMV of course...

For now, I'm still at the stage you mentioned where I'm very selective, especially when it comes to produce. I want ripe. I want juicy. I
And I prefer to reach in the back of the cooler for milk that won't expire for an additional 4 or 5 days rather than the stuff closer to the front.
Same for things like mayonnaise. Jars at one store may have a best-before date two months away, but another store may be in good shape six months out.
Those things still matter while I'm able-bodied, but will surely take a backseat in another decade or two.

(192,325 posts)Two orders in a row - Krogers via Uber eats I think - we got a head of cabbage not a head of lettuce.
My wife once ordered 4 bananas. We got 4 bunches of bananas.
Weve also received a pic of our groceries on the porch. Not our porch but a porch. Weve also received someone elses groceries.
Other than that theyve been pretty good. The issue refunds very quickly.

I use Whole Foods through Amazon. My veggies come rotten or huge for the past year. Looking for alternative that does not use Instacart. Can no longer drive due to failing vision. (North Orange County, California)

(36,699 posts)...my wife often has them delivered. We're a senior couple, too. Three years ago we went through a period when her health was poor but I absolutely had to be out of town for a couple months for work, my last semester before retiring. Everything had to be delivered. We were so grateful for those deliveries!

(12,756 posts)First off, I don't trust anyone else to shop for me. Unless it's my husband, anyway, and even then I'm skeptical sometimes, but he will text me for advice. Secondly, where I live, the options are extremely limited---Food Lion or Walmart. So I'd rather do it myself, TYVM.

(66,892 posts)We still eat healthy foods, we just don't have the variety I used to cook up. I tire more easily now and find I must conserve my energy accordingly. I have back up frozen foods such as stuffed peppers --all I have to do is stick them in the microwave and they are ready and really good. What is important is good, nourishing food. Hubby is handicapped and I am his caregiver. Age has done that. I have to weigh the relative importance of what I can and can't do.

(57,863 posts)you see any spotting/freckling on the banana peel, or the start of a dark line around the base of the stem. Once refrigerated, the peel will still darken, but the fruit itself should be fine for at least a few days after that starts.

(13,566 posts)I do this all the time because I was tired of bananas going bruised and squishy after few days. I slice the bananas and collect the slices in freezer bags. I use the frozen slices in my oatmeal every morning. I microwave the oatmeal so it gets too hot to eat but after I stir in 6-7 banana slices, it's just the right temperature and the banana slices are sweet and jelly-like. I also use 4-5 slices in my post workout smoothie: on big scoop of whey, one small scoop of collagen, half a cup of strawberry/banana kefir, one cup skim milk, a teaspoon of L-arginine alphaketogluterate (to prevent muscle soreness), teaspoon of flaxseed oil. Banana slices keep for a while in the freezer.

(66,892 posts)I'lll check out the L-arginine and flaxseed oil. That sounds promising!

(13,566 posts)It will lower your blood pressure and dangerously so if you are on BP or ED meds. Flaxseed oil is a good omega-3 source for people like me who can't eat seafood. Start with just one teaspoon a day to avoid GI distress.

(72,982 posts)Shop mostly Aldi, but get a few things from Kroger & occasionally Target.
I've been very pleased with items purchased & when something is missing, they are very quick to issue refunds.
There is an option for each item to select a replacement if fhe item ordered is out of stock. Also a section for shopper notes, where you can choose to type in specific instructions.
Enjoy!

(42,402 posts)I struggle with walking a lot of the time (hips and sacrum) and my partner often isn't up for crowds, especially the kind that push shopping carts without looking where they're going.
Target, which is four blocks up the street, charges $14.99 per month for delivery. We figure it's worth it, and you can check the app to see if they have what you want in stock when you're ordering.
CTyankee
(66,892 posts)That way I can plan meals around the discounted foods and the fresh produce.

(21,525 posts)Let the bananas get ripe, peel them, mash them, put into a container with a lid and freeze them. They have a texture like ice cream, and you can add toppings like fruit syrup, nuts, chocolate, whatever you like. Or eat it plain. I like this and one of my friends in Brazil said it is a popular and refreshing way to use bananas.
Or slice the banana and lay the slices on wax paper. Freeze them, and then dip them in chocolate or peanut butter, again, whatever you like. I haven't tried this, but it is one of my daughter's favorite snacks.

(52,014 posts)There's a local mini-super for veggies, and I buy frozen and canned. There are also farm stands.
So once a month to all the supermarkets. Hope to get that down to once every 6 weeks.
Eating a more basic diet helps. When I run out of bread I can bake a loaf, or go with pancakes.

(6,287 posts)So convenient. The stores are so large that we can't get around them any longer. We order three or four bananas with no problem. And the people who deliver are always willing to out the bags on our counter. Worth the added price. I do miss picking out the best produce but the convenience over rides that.

(7,911 posts)frozen items I don't order unless it's the dead of winter. I hear you loud and clear about being limited to only so much time standing. I've got bad feet, bad knees, bad hips and arthritis. One thing I have done for cooking is what an elder relative taught me years ago. I sit down to mix things etc. My relative used to have a small low table on which she would set her ingredients, bowls, baking pans and utensils.

(27,001 posts)I too am the only one who eats the bananas. I use about 1/2 a banana a day on my cereal. Usually buy 3 at a time. I keep them in the refrigerator and they usually last 5-6 days. The skin may turn dark, but the fruit itself stays in pretty good shape. Give it a try.

I do this with citrus and then use it in my drinks to help keep drinks cold. Works great and prevents the fruit from going bad before I have a chance to use it up.

(7,569 posts)She's 74, lives alone in the Chicago area, doesn't drive, and has bad knees - it can be quite a hassle to get around in good weather, let alone a Chicago winter.
One of her friends recently showed her how to order groceries online and I gotta tell ya, she's over the Moon! For her it's more than worth the monthly fee - IIRC she buys from Jewel-Osco.
