In 2026, Seattle Mariners to become sixth MLB team to retire one number for two players

On August 9, 2025, the Seattle Mariners are going to retire small-ball specialist outfielder Ichiro Suzuki's 51 in a huge celebration at T-Mobile Park. If you want to go, there are fewer than 50 seats left and they're about $300 apiece.

Today they announced that in 2026 they'll retire the same number for SP Randy Johnson. The date will be announced when the 2026 schedule is released.

The other five teams:
Teams that retired 42 for Jackie Robinson and one of their own players:
New York Yankees: Mariano Rivera in 2013
St. Louis Cardinals: Bruce Sutter in 2006

Teams that retired a number for two of their own players:
New York Yankees: #8 retired in 1972 for Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra
Montreal Expos: #10 retired for Rusty Staub in 1993 and Andre Dawson in 1997
Chicago Cubs: #31 retired in 2009 for Fergie Jenkins and Greg Maddux
Oakland A's: #34 retired for Rollie Fingers in 1993 and Dave Stewart in 2022

The Cincinnati Reds retired Willard Hershberger's number in 1940 after his suicide. They returned it to service in 1942. In 1984, it was permanently retired for Johnny Bench. I didn't include the Reds on the lists above as those teams permanently recognize the honored players' numbers as retired; the Reds' retired-number page doesn't list Mr. Hershberger.
