CE is not just letting people die. It is trying to make the deaths disappear.

That is the new policy, according to an internal memo from Acting ICE director David Venturella. Venturella told agency employees that ICE is eliminating the requirement to report deaths occurring within 30 days after people leave its custody, returning instead to reporting only deaths that happen while a person is formally still in custody.

This is not an accounting change. It is a body count loophole. This is the kind of rule Trump’s minions write when they know the jail is making people sick, when they know medical care is failing, when they know detainees are being released gravely ill, when they know some of them may die days later — and when the institutional response is not to fix the system, but to narrow the definition of what counts.

ICE is not saying fewer people are dying. It is saying fewer deaths will be its problem. That is the scandal — but it is only the tip of the iceberg.
