Platner campaign targets Collins over stock portfolio, wealth

Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner on Monday slammed incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) for having a high-earning stock portfolio and net worth.

Platner’s campaign said in a Monday press release that Collins is worth up to $9.6 million and that she owns the eighth best-performing stock portfolio in the Senate.

His team says she earns $342,520 as income from investments annually, while his main source of income is his oyster farm.

Collins’s campaign did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the matter.

Open Secrets shows Collins having a net worth of approximately $4.12 million in 2018, aided by nearly $500,000 in assets in the pharmaceutical and electronics industries.But according to the data platform Quiver Quantitive, Collins’ net worth has grown to its current estimate of $6.92 million.

Platner, when asked what issues he hears most from Mainers—whether they are civilians or veterans—comes back to the kitchen-table issues like economics and health care.

He said Mainers are concerned about Medicare and Medicaid cuts, rural hospitals being shut down, and treating veterans in a state with a higher per-capita vet population.

Report: Collins accepted nearly $500k from Big Pharma, cast votes to benefit industry

A new analysis of the possible correlation between drug manufacturers’ political giving and policy outcomes shows that Sen. Susan Collins has taken nearly half a million dollars from Big Pharma during her career and cast key votes that have benefited the interests of one of the nation’s top corporate lobbies.

The report, released on Thursday by Lower Drug Prices Now, shows that Collins’ campaign accounts have received $22,000 directly from the drug industry so far this year, and $478,000 from drug industry corporations, political action committees and individuals since her election to the Senate in 1996.

The report also notes that Collins received a campaign donation in 2007 from the former vice president of Purdue Pharma, Jonathan Sackler. Purdue Pharma is the manufacturer of OxyContin. Earlier this year, Collins denied that she took the contribution when confronted by a constituent.

New Study Predicts More Than 1.1 Million Deaths Among Medicare Recipients Due to the Inability to Afford Their Medications

WASHINGTON, DC and SAN DIEGO, CA – Nov. 19, 2020 – More than 1.1 million Medicare patients could die over the next decade because they cannot afford to pay for their prescription medications, according to a new study released today by the West Health Policy Center, a nonprofit and nonpartisan policy research group.

If current drug pricing trends and associated cost-sharing continue, researchers estimate cost-related non-adherence to drug therapy will result in the premature deaths of 112,000 beneficiaries a year, making it a leading cause of death in the U.S., ahead of diabetes, influenza, pneumonia, and kidney disease. Millions more will suffer worsening health conditions and run up medical expenses that will cost Medicare an additional $177.4 billion by 2030 or $18 billion a year for the next 10 years.
