Admit It. Gavin Newsom Is the 2028 Front-runner. (Politico)
For years, Democrats and pundits have rolled their eyes at Gavin Newsom. But hes positioned better than anyone else for the future of politics.SAN FRANCISCO No Democrat has had a better two years than Gavin Newsom and because of it, the California governor a national figure since he was a 36-year-old boy mayor has claimed a new title: front-runner. Its easy to find Newsom naysayers. In fact, there may not be a modern political figure who was simultaneously so well-positioned to be his partys nominee and so doubted by the smart set since, well, Joe Biden in 2020.
So lets not make the mistake of ignoring whats in plain view and give the governor his due. By the old rules of Democratic nominations, Newsom fits neatly in the tradition of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama: younger, outsider candidates who could credibly run fresh campaigns against the Washington status quo of both parties while claiming enough insider credentials to reassure party mandarins who care about such things.
The San Franciscan has never lived a day outside of California, presents younger than 58 because of his hair and genes and has endeared himself to his party rank-and-file by criticizing Democratic leaders for not fighting harder before leading by example to confront Donald Trump. Newsom also attended and scribbled notes at the first Clinton Global Initiative meeting in 2005 and has to be the only first-term lieutenant governor to have Bill Clinton, Michael Bloomberg and Arianna Huffington blurb his book (a tome we shall come back to).
Newsom is also the best-positioned Democrat according to the new rules of politics namely, whether you are or can become famous by breaking through on social media. Ask yourself: How many other potential candidates are plausible celebrities who can transcend the political-pop culture divide a la Obama and Trump? If you believe the phone in your hand will, more than any factor, determine the next Democratic nominee, its hard not to grasp Newsoms strength. As the kids say, he gives main character energy.

Newsom has taken the whip and done what has needed to be done. And a lot of us Democrats have breathed a sigh of relief because of what he's done. Will that hold up down the road? We'll see.

(4,007 posts)In California we all LOVE our Governor.
Let's not anoint him at this stage of the game, we have so many talented dems.......let's see them in toto and not just because he has a superb comms team.

(4,007 posts)Gavin Newsom, that is fine with me. We just have to make sure the Dems take the White House and at least one house of Congress. That being said... We Californians do love our Governor.
I'm a Californian, and "love" is too strong of a word for what I feel about Newsom. He really pissed me off over some of his actions during COVID, and there's always the whole Kimberly Guilfoyle thing, which makes me seriously question his judgment. However, he has really stepped it up over the last few years and I have been impressed. He's definitely good at being a politician. Depending on who runs in the primaries I wouldn't have a problem supporting him, and if he's the nominee I will be all in.

(1,067 posts)I also want to see Kamala Harris run again, and perhaps the great Jasmine Crockett. I'd like to see a ticket with any two of these three. My politics align more closely with AOC but I think Kamala was a great candidate in 2024 and would be much stronger in 2028 and perhaps more able to bring all parts of the Democratic Coalition together. And Jasmine Crockett is nothing short of phenomenal. Having said that, I do think Gavin Newsom is an awesome Governor and a fearless campaigner willing to take risks. Let's have some great debates in 2027/28.

And I certainly won't say she was a weak candidate. She SHOULD have won. She WOULD have won if it wasn't for things on the other side of the fence. He certainly wasn't the strongest candidate. The loudest one, maybe.
But enough of that. I'm still hopeful about a woman president. We're not that stupid, are we? But as far as 2028, let's see where things go. As a Californian, I'm very proud of Newsom, especially the way he's smackdowning Trump. But we have to win 2026. Whatever it takes.

(21,710 posts)Newsom is ahead in the name recognition polls, because currently he is the loudest Dem mouth in the room. While I enjoy his trolling of Trump, that hardly makes him the best choice for the 2028 nominee.
Wait 18 months, as the field of Dem candidates becomes crowded, and then see how hes polling.

(128,533 posts)Let him compete with whoever else is interested, see how it all shakes out when the primary season starts. Who knows, maybe Shady Vance will already be squatting in the Oval Office and having to fight all the other vipers to hold onto the GOP nomination.
