Everyone Thinks Democrats Are Doomed. Here's Why They're Totally Wrong.
Theres a lot of conflicting polling and narratives out there about the Democratic Party and our strengthor weaknessheading into the midterms next year. I want to take a minute to unpack how Im thinking about this moment, given the data we have
A new Wall Street Journal poll shows Democrats have a major brand problem. Very few voters trust us on the biggest issues facing the countryoutside of health care. The party is, frankly, historically unpopular in my lifetime. People are frustrated, and rightly so. I believe thats due in large part to Joe Bidens unpopularity as he left office, combined with early missteps from the establishment responding to Donald Trumps destructive first 100 days.
But then you get this second data point from CNN this weekend, which in many ways feels at odds with the first: 70% of Democrats say theyre motivated to vote in the midterms, while only about half of Republicans say the same.
Then theres the third point: Trumps approval rating is faltering. CBS has him dropping from 53% when he took office to 42% now. Ive seen it lowerinto the upper 30s. I still think theres a honeymoon effect happening. People want to believe hes going to lower prices, help them buy a house, get food on the table, retire with some dignity.
