New passport system will make taking at-home photos easier

Source: USA Today

Updated July 8, 2026, 9:57 p.m. ET

Getting and renewing your passport might get just a little bit easier, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

On July 2, Rubio said the State Department is developing a more streamlined system that would allow Americans to more easily take and upload passport photos using their phones or computers.

Americans can already upload passport photos taken from their phones and computers; however, they must meet the Department of State's strict requirements. Rubio said the new system will use real-time, built-in facial recognition technology to make the process even quicker.

"You should be able to take that picture on that device as opposed to going somewhere. Now, the CVS people, of course, hate this, and the Walgreens and all those other places," Rubio said. "But you’ll be able to take your picture from that device and be able to have it in real time, through our security system, verify the facial ID."

Sent my Passport application and with photo, check, and required documents in on the 15th of April PRIORITY MAIL to Tyler, Texas. I received my new Passport good until 2036 on April 30th.

The Passport office was open but limping along slowly. So I paid the $100 rush fee and I got my passport in about 2 weeks plus shipping time. They don't have those Covid delays any more, so normal turnaround time (no rush fee) is even better than that.

I agree that Priority Mail is the best way to send and receive!

2 weeks. I was surprised that I used snail mail rather than online.

5. I'm happy that my passport is good until 2035 and I do not have a photo of demented Trump in it.

I was just reading about the mess with long lines and missed plane connections caused by the EU's new EES system that requires a photo and fingerprints to enter an EU country. The system is supposed to store both to match when you leave, but its facial recognition programs do not work well. People have reported being in line for hours at multiple EU airports.

I haven't been to Europe since this new system came into use, but I've had difficulty in the past with France's facial recognition software reading my passport photo and had to go through passport control with a human agent. I wonder if photos generated with US facial recognition software will be readable with different EU or other software. I wish I trusted this State Department more knowing how the Trump administration cuts corners and hires people for loyalty instead of competence.

I'd be interested to see what data the trumpists collect about/from your computer while they are performing their real-time facial recognition.

No fucking thanks.
