Trump renews feud with Italy PM Giorgia Meloni by suggesting she's stalking him in latest social media post

Donald Trump has reignited his feud with Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni in a fresh social media post.

Trump shared a picture of Meloni, who has been previously referred to in the press as the “Trump whisperer,” looking up at the U.S. president and smiling on Truth Social on Sunday evening.

A caption across the top of the picture read, “Restraining order needed.”

Previously, Trump has sung Meloni’s praises, describing her a “beautiful young woman”.However, the pair became embroiled in a public feud following a Truth Social post on 20 June, in which Trump accused Meloni of asking for a picture with him “over and over” at the G7 Summit in France.

Trump is so universally reviled and held in so much contempt in Italy that continuing the feud with Meloni actually increases her popularity. If the goal is to keep right wingers in power in Europe after the collapse of Orbanism, manufacturing some goofy feud with Meloni would be one way to accomplish that.

Of course, Trump is not actually smart, and would never consent to being mocked or defied by a woman, even if that accrued to his general benefit. So, yeah, this is just the usual Trump idiocy, even if it does end up helping Meloni a lot to be in a feud with Trump.

A still image taken from that video shows the position of the participants in question. From left to right: Costa; Trump; Meloni; German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In the background, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney; Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Those body positions clearly match those shown in larger, uncropped versions of the "gazing" image shared by Trump:

The most important difference between the two versions can be found in the high-resolution, open-eyed "gazing" expression on Meloni's face, which some observers might interpret as admiring -- hence the "restraining order" joke shared by Trump on July 5.

But that expression cannot be found in the original video, and was therefore the result of digital editing, perhaps including the use of AI enhancement.

I think someone in Trump's entourage remembers that frightening photo of a MAGA woman looking crazily at him, at the front row of a rally - can't find it right now, but I think some will know the picture I mean.

Ahead of NATO summits, normal American presidents prepare by reviewing diplomatic objectives and scheduling discussions with key international partners. Ahead of this week’s NATO summit in Turkey, Donald Trump prepared for the gathering by needlessly extending his weird offensive against an allied leader for no good reason. Time magazine reported:

United States President Donald Trump on Sunday evening shared a social media post featuring Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, reopening a recent dispute between the two leaders ahead of this week’s NATO Summit in Turkey.

Trump posted an image on Truth Social that shows Meloni looking up at the American President, with the words “restraining order needed” printed across the top.

....The Italian prime minister was the only European leader to attend his second inauguration, which came on the heels of a Mar-a-Lago visit. Headlines that referred to Meloni as Europe’s “Trump whisperer” soon followed.

In April, however, the relationship started to deteriorate. After the Republican picked a bizarre fight with Pope Leo XIV, Meloni defended the pontiff. The presidential whine was almost immediate: Trump complained that Meloni was “very different from what I thought,” adding, “I’m shocked by her. I ⁠thought she had courage. I was wrong.” He added, “She is the one who is unacceptable.”

In June, for reasons unknown, Trump renewed the offensive, telling an Italian journalist that Meloni had “begged” him to take a photo with her at the recent G7 summit in France.....

This week, after the story had faded from view and as Trump prepared for an important international gathering, there was no reason to renew his offensive against his Italian counterpart. Apparently unable to help himself, he did it anyway.

Soon after, the Italian foreign minister told La Stampa newspaper that the country would no longer officially respond to the president’s nonsense.

“We have a U.S. president who loves to provoke, especially on social media,” Tajani said. “We have decided to stop responding to these remarks so as not to fuel disputes among our allies.”
