Netanyahu wants to wean Israel off US military support, he tells CBS

May 10 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hopes to wean Israel off U.S. military support within a decade ‌as his country pushes to strengthen ties with Gulf states, he said in an interview that aired on Sunday.

"I want to draw down to zero the American financial support, the financial component of the military cooperation that we have," Netanyahu told CBS News' "60 Minutes" program.

Netanyahu said Israel receives about $3.8 billion of U.S. military aid a year. The U.S. has agreed to provide a total of $38 billion in military aid to Israel from 2018 to 2028. But it is "absolutely" the right time to possibly reset the U.S.-Israeli financial relationship, Netanyahu said. "I don't want to wait for the next Congress," he told CBS. "I want to start now."

Israel has long had bipartisan consensus within the U.S. Congress for military aid, but support from lawmakers and the public has frayed since the outbreak of war in Gaza in October 2023.

But, yes. Please continue to rub Trump's face in that pile of feces (not to mention that $50 billion worth of lost munitions, bombs, planes used for your Iranian War, Bibi). He certainly deserves it. We don't. But I guess we have no choice.

And some wonder why so many Americans are turning against Bibi Netanyahu especially and Israeli support ultimately. Congrats Bibi and Trump. You've done what I'd never have thought would happen in this country--turned us against Israel--just as you have all of our other alliances.

Have you checked how much money Congress has taken from AIPAC? Including Democrats.

Bibi would never have invaded Iran and Lebanon without our participation.

Maybe Bibi feels he doesn't need us now to attain his land grab of Gaza, the West Bank and southern Lebanon?

The UAE and Saudi Arabia paid Krasnov a lot of money to invade Iran, it wasn't just Bibi who coerced Krasnov.

It sounds like they have once again won the US lottery, this time settling for a one time cash payout. Of course I am only throwing spaghetti at a wall. It is just as likely that someone has an annuity and needs cash now.

What a perfect yet also wrong choice of words. Weaning is usually about the mother putting restrictions on the breastfeeding - babies don't want to give that up till they're into toddlerhood! US military support must be starting to look like a liability since Israel has spent decades acting like the spoiled rich kid who still wants daddy to pay for everything because they think they deserve it. Netanyahu can f*** off and die as far as I'm concerned.

Netanyahu said he had the U.S. wrapped around his little finger, implying he could do pretty much anything and never lose American support and money.

He's used the very real pain and suffering of the Jewish people as an excuse to be an authoritarian warmonger. If other nations complain, he accuses them of being "antisemitic".

No sane person condones the brutal genocide of the Jewish people in the 1930s and 1940s, as no one should condone what Netanyahu is doing to his neighbors in the Middle East.

Sometimes it appears as if we've never really learned anything. History just keeps repeating itself, different players using the same old script.

Anyone who has tried to quit smoking cigarettes knows, cutting back slowly won't stop your addiction. Nope, cold-turkey is the way to go. Shut off all weapons and funding. Israel is not a democracy when half of its population is not allowed to vote.

Instead of Israel by putting us as the face of the attack on Iran. Therefore it wasn't Israel that started it and got the rest of the countries attacked it was America. Then Israel turns on us and out and out blames us while they become the hero of the Middle East a d America the enemy. Don't tell me this wasn't the plan. Whoever Israel got to carry out the attacks ( America or Great Britain or EU) he was going to blame them.
