A new bipartisan bill would remove the U.S. Secret Service from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), following several threats to President Trumps life and a record-breaking lapse in DHS funding.
Reps. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) and Russell Fry (R-S.C.) are co-leading the legislation, which would transfer the federal law enforcement agency to the Executive Office of the President.
Fry cited the recent attack at the White House Correspondents Association dinner, where federal prosecutors allege that Trump and his administration were the target. Secret Service agents responded to the incident and safely escorted the president and his Cabinet from the scene. One agent who was shot in his bulletproof vest was uninjured.
Moving the Secret Service to the White House allows the organization to uphold its mission while simultaneously giving them more direct accountability to the President of the United States, Fry said in a Thursday statement. In a time where political attacks are becoming more and more rampant, the Secret Service should be able to focus solely on its mission of protecting top U.S. officials not dealing with bureaucratic tape that ultimately serves as a distraction to keeping the President safe.

They used to be under the Treasury Department before the Homeland Security Act of 2002.

(19,919 posts)I firmly believe that the MAGA came from Republican projection that they always do.
They think that during the depression was when the nation was great as the top 1% did indeed benefit greatly.

(7,946 posts)they were prior to Bush's edict. Second, the entire entity "DHS" should be disbanded as un-American. Motherland, Fatherland, Homeland... they all reek of fascist governments gone by. This one set the stage for what was to come. A meaningful gesture would be to trashcan the whole damn thing and getting us back to being "Americans."

(30,253 posts)direct authority over anything? And this is because political attacks are becoming more and more rampant and DHS funding shortfalls? Moskowitz should understand that all the alleged violence against Trump is suspect, and the Secret Service was not stationed to protect any of the Dems who have faced political violence, even unto death. The 🍊💩 will not hesitate to put citizens in the concentration camps using a fully funded DHS but thank god HE wont have to worry anyone will kill him.
To be clear, I think DHS should be abolished, but FFS House Democrats, lets do it when were in power again and its effects wont be used against us.

(172,302 posts)and such a reorg is NOT "instant". It can take a few years to do any major federal reorg (which is what happened with the creation of DHS). And legislation usually takes that in account, meaning they can direct for it to not go into effect until the next administration.
