Republican infighting between two important constituencies the agriculture sector and the MAHA coalition is threatening passage of a bill leaders are counting on to help woo rural voters ahead of the midterms.
House GOP leaders hope this week to advance a long-stalled farm bill that would secure a slew of industry and rural investments. They see a political incentive to move quickly now to shore up farm country support in advance of the November elections, plus heed calls from President Donald Trump to PASS THE FARM BILL, NOW!
The farm bill traditionally comes to the floor with bipartisan support. But House Democrats this time are largely opposed to the package because it does not reverse the massive cuts to the countrys largest food aid program enacted by last years GOP megabill. Thats putting extra under pressure on Republicans to see it over the finish line amid intraparty disagreements over provisions related to pesticides, livestock laws and ethanol sales.
The biggest source of conflict is over a provision that would shield pesticide makers a powerful lobbying force with agriculture state Republicans from lawsuits. It comes as the Trump administration has also moved to protect access to a key pesticide after chemical manufacturers told the White House they were concerned about regulatory uncertainty or MAHA-driven crackdowns. Removing the measure would stoke backlash from Trump officials and farm state Republicans.

The "Farm Bill" is a 5-year Appropriations document (tied to the federal Oct. 1 - Sept. 3 fiscal year) that funds a myriad of agricultural-related things kike crop insurance, agricultural subsidies (e.g., milk), and food programs like SNAP. Congress hasn't passed an "updated" version since 2018 (and that was late), and has basically extended that version (with tweaks) every year since.

(12,398 posts)Immunity from prosecution is absolutely insane and stripping that from the bill should be priority number 1 over anything else.
With that they could literally start making DDT or even something worse and no one could stop them or hold them accountable.

(11,002 posts)Many of these crop dusters spray pesticides that drift on peoples yards. Kids walk on grass, track pesticides into their houses and end up breathing them all day long.
There was a pesticide study done using tracers that glow to see how much pesticide was tracked into farmers homes. - rugs had the most but pesticide was basically all over their houses.
Albuquerque sprays pesticide out of trucks for mosquito control. In the mid 1990s some stupid employer put old malathion into sprayer when they ran out of what they were using and poisoned my whole block. They did this 3 nights in a row.
Some foods are more pesticided than others. Like I would never eat a non organic strawberry.
