Democrats vow to shut down Senate over Iran conflict

A group of Senate Democrats are threatening to use every procedural tool at their disposal to hold up business on the Senate floor unless Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and other senior officials testify before key committees under oath on the military conflict with Iran.
We have collectively agreed that were going to use the levers that we have, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) said Monday evening. We should be having hearings on the biggest military engagement since the war in Afghanistan.
Each individual senator has a tremendous amount of power to disrupt the normal functioning of the Senate as well as certain privileges that we can exercise, and what we have agreed right now is that were not going to let the Senate continue business as usual, which seems to be ignoring the urgent issues the American people are dealing with, he said.
The Democrats want to grill Rubio and Hegseth in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee over the expected duration of the conflict, its cost, the lack of a clear endgame, and the lack of clear rules of engagement amid growing civilian casualties, including an estimated 170 people killed by a missile strike on a girls school in southern Iran.

This is kabuki theater. I hope they come through, though.

This not just one poll, either. Polls have been showing this for quite some time.
If you think these representatives dont know that, then there is a flaw in your thinking process.

(52,183 posts)Israel has covered its bases. Looks like they have Lindsey Graham solidly on their side too.
But, Democrats have a good reason to be against the Iran war right now. First, because it's not popular with the American public and the midterms is a pending matter. And because Trumps looks weak. After that speech it does sound like he's getting pressure from Republicans. There is blood in the water and if Democrats don't take this moment to move, they will lose a valuable opportunity.

FEBRUARY 28, 2026
Senator Coons statement on Iran strikes
WILMINGTON, Del. U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, released the following statement after the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran:
I am praying for the safety of our service members and the many civilians in the Middle East in harms way today. President Trumps military campaign against Iran and call for regime change are the beginning of a reckless new war of choice with no clear strategy and no clear endpoint. This is not how a democracy goes to war. Less than five years after the end of the longest war in American history, the United States is once again staring down another open-ended conflict with a hostile country in the Middle East that could cost the lives of many American service members. This is not a limited, defensive strike, but rather a full-throated declaration of war that does not clearly serve the interests of or reflect the wishes of the American people.
And this is only a little bit of it.
There is way more at the link.

Eric Swallwell takes AIPAC money. Here is what he said:
California Rep. Eric Swalwell argues Iran never posed a threat to the US
A Fox News @ Night panel looks at Democrats' criticism of President Donald Trump's strikes on Iran and debates the human rights abuses and nuclear ambitions of the Iranian regime, as well as the current power vacuum in the country.
Fox link so not posting it.
You can Google it if you dont believe me.
Raphael Warnock takes AIPAC money.
Heres what he says:
Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock opposed the strike, saying the military action put American troops and national security at risk and that Congress was bypassed.
The United States of America is a democracy and no President has the right to declare war or to drag the nation into war, Warnock said. Congress should return to session immediately to debate the use of force as is our solemn duty.

Lets try for a little more complexity in our thinking.

(1,554 posts)It plays into the hands of those who want to amplify the myth that "Dems are feckless and ineffective" (what better way to demonstrate it than by doing what you're asking??) This solves nothing. It achieves nothing.
What is your "proposed strategy" ... that's conveniently vague. What strategy will be effective by a minority party that will force the majority GOP to comply with our wishes?
Please continue. I'm all ears.

(1,554 posts)Please. You want them to "take action" (presumably something that will actually make a difference) but you can't tell me what "action" will make you happy? No matter what the Democrats do, the GOP will always be in charge.
So it becomes a vicious cycle of blame and accusations for being in the minority in a system that does not give the minority party many options. Are you listening to what you're saying?
We need the votes that will put the Democrats back in power... with a majority. But the chronically unhappy and Dem-blamers are doing their level best to suppress the vote and falsely portray the Democrats is feckless, weak, cowards... etc etc. (Charming, eh?)
It's an endless game of
"Do something!"
"Okay here's what we did/said."
"That's not enough, things are still the same. Do something else."
"What will you have us do?"
"I don't know, just do something to make it all better."
"We're doing what we can."
"I hate you. Democrats suck! I'm never voting for you again! And I'll tell my friends to not vote for you either!"
(Sigh.)
Does that about capture it? How does that help? I can assure you that it does NOT help. It just helps to perpetuate a false myth and the GOP IS LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT!! Of course the GOP is going to watch and smile at the circular firing squad.
I see that I'm wasting my time here. Please continue... but without me.

(1,554 posts)...I think its important to understand that the U.S. Senate doesn't have a neon CLOSED sign that they can turn on. Democrats are in the minority (4753). They cannot simply outvote the GOP to stop all business. Instead, 'shutting it down' means using procedural friction to make it (nearly) impossible for business as usual.
Democrats can "shut down" the Senate by demanding a roll call vote on every minor procedural step or by filing endless amendments. This doesn't stop the Senate instantly... it just makes every 5-minute task take 5 hours.
There's a 2-speech rule... wherein each Senator is allowed two speeches on a single topic per legislative day. A determined minority can use these to grind the clock, but it requires 47 people to literally stay on the floor for days or weeks to maintain that pressure.
In the Senate, the minority party uses levers like the filibuster and War Powers Act to force votes and delay proceedings. With regard to war powers resolutions, those are "privileged" measures, and it allows a single Senator to bypass leadership and force a floor vote, but that doesn't happen "right fucking now" either. The process has built-in waiting periods (10 days) for committee review before a vote can even happen.
But yeah... saying or insinuating that Democrats are "spineless" and "weak" and "cowards" or "compromised" or "disloyal" ... I'm sure that's helping. Keep it up, eh?
