House votes to reopen U.S. government, bill heads to Trump's desk

The House of Representatives on Tuesday narrowly passed a bill to end the three-day partial shutdown of much of the U.S. government, virtually guaranteeing the end of the closure.

The vote was 217-214 and sends the bill to President Donald Trump, who has said he will sign it immediately. Much of the government has been shuttered since Saturday morning.

The bill provides funding for the departments of Defense, Treasury, State, Health and Human Services, Labor, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, and Education through the remainder of the fiscal year on Sept. 30. It also provides two weeks of stopgap funding for the Department of Homeland Security after the Senate stripped full-year funding for the agency in response to the killings of two U.S. citizens by federal immigration officers.

Now, Congress will turn to thorny negotiations over new guardrails on immigration enforcement in the DHS funding bill.

which was without the SAVE Act. Otherwise it would have had to go back to the Senate for a revote.

and that is where they could try to slide that crap on.

But if they tried, it would surely die in the Senate.

but I just don't anymore. No matter which way we turn, women are being excluded by design, it seems. And there's been a large contingent of men (and some really stupid R women) who don't want American women to have the right to vote. I just can't believe we've gone so far backwards that I'm gonna have to fight a fight at 70, that my great grandmother won for my grandmother!

That Democrats were not going to help them pass these bills. Again, why the shutdown if Democrats are just going to cave with no change in the deal that was already on the table. Ugh.

He said they weren't going to help "fast track" it, meaning not helping them get a total of 290 votes YESTERDAY so they could "suspend the Rules" (that they ended up working on Sunday night and all of Monday), and get it done "faster" (i.e., they were forced to go through "the regular process" of debate, etc., versus going straight to the vote yesterday).

Even voting an extension to any funding related to ice is disgusting. These people are, very literally, running concentration camps and beating and terrorizing and murdering people on the streets.

Implying that they are going to make them accountable is ridiculous. Especially so if your standard for that is regular police departments. There is zero real world accountability for police.
I'm made as hell that Congress is going to act like it cares but in real life they are going to keep feeding them billions of dollars with little to no real life accountability and they still get to wage war on innocent people.

because the funding will run out on DHS in a couple weeks WITH a holiday (President's Day) in there (it is on Feb. 16 and they usually take that week off for a "District Work Period" ).

In other words, (D)s were able to get that one Department separated out as a concentrated target.

Regarding "accountability", they already got a "concession" with respect to body cams. They will need to hold Noem's tiny feet to that fire. The rest of the demands will need to be pushed and we need to make sure that at least 7 (D)s in the Senate don't agree to anything until those demands are met (meaning it wouldn't matter if it passed the House because the Senate still has their 60-vote "filibuster" rule to advance to the final debate/vote and they need 7 of us to cross over to do it).

She already said the footage would not be available to the public.
If their standard of accountability is to be like city police then it's my position it's not worth the paper it's printed on
It's not about training or the new recruits. The person that shot Good was a shooting instructor and had several years of experience. The two that shot Pretti each had several years of experience as well. So it's not a training or experience issue. It's baked in to how they treat people. Beating and murdering people is their normal mode of operation.
Ice is broken beyond repair and should be gutted like an old meth house and completely rebuilt with new staff. It should not be called "ice". That name should be burned out of existence.

can definitely make sure it is obtained. The courts would handle whether it is released publicly or not via FOIA (Freedom of Information Act IS still a valid law... ).

And it IS about "training". LEO nationwide have been trained on how to DEESCALATE. Apparently this rogue crew, or as my Philly city Sheriff called them "Fake wannabe whatevers", haven't been trained on that.

I think a reckoning is coming.

But most cops don't deescalate anything (see: John Crawford III). They shoot first, ask questions never.
The bodies are piled higher than a ten story building by cops that did and said whatever they wanted and nothing happened to them. (See: Edward Bronstein)

Saying you will hold them to the same standards as regular police is no standard at all.
